Darlinghurst packs terraces, art deco walk-ups and converted warehouses into some of the tightest streets in Sydney, with almost no off-street parking anywhere. Most moves here are studios and one-bedrooms, and the job is decided by the street and the stairs rather than by how much you own.

Moving in Darlinghurst?

Straight answer on price and availability — usually within minutes.

Darlinghurst is small flats in old buildings on streets that were never designed for a truck. Art deco walk-ups off Victoria Street, terraces with no frontage, studio conversions above shops, and almost nowhere legal to stop. The removalists Darlinghurst residents call back are the ones who work out the parking before they work out the furniture.

We are based on Bondi Road, a short run down Oxford Street. On an hourly job, that drive is your money.

Why is Darlinghurst one of the harder suburbs to move in?

Because almost every constraint stacks at once: no driveway, a narrow street, an old building without a lift, and traffic that does not care that you booked a truck.

  • Walk-ups without lifts. The art deco and 1960s blocks around Victoria Street and Liverpool Street routinely have three or four flights and no lift. That is a crew-size decision.
  • No off-street parking. Terraces and converted shopfronts open onto the footpath. City of Sydney issues removalist parking permits and they need lead time.
  • Narrow and one-way streets. Several of the residential streets between Oxford and William are one-way and tight enough to rule out the largest truck.
  • Traffic that does not stop. Oxford Street and the Kings Cross end are busy from mid-morning until late. An early start is worth more here than in almost any other suburb we cover.

Studios, walk-ups and the Victoria Street problem

The biggest variable in a Darlinghurst move is the carry — the distance and the flights between the door and where the truck can legally stand.

A studio on the first floor with a permitted space outside is a two-hour job. The same studio on the fourth floor with the truck parked two streets away is a four-hour one, and quoting them the same way is how removalists end up in an argument at the end of the day.

Victoria Street and the Kings Cross end is the densest: old blocks, no lifts, permit parking only. The Oxford Street side has more converted shopfronts and studios above retail. Towards Surry Hills the terraces start and the staircases get narrower.

Small moves done properly

Darlinghurst has more studio and one-bedroom moves than anywhere else we work, and small does not mean careless. A studio move is still a booked permit, a protected staircase and a signed completion form. It is just fewer boxes.

Single-item and part-load jobs are common here too — a couch that will not fit the new place, a bed going to storage, a desk moving between share houses. We quote those the same transparent hourly way rather than inventing a minimum that punishes small jobs.

Even a studio move gets easier when the building side is sorted early. Lifts, docks and time slots, in one place.

What we move most in Darlinghurst

  • Studios and one-bedroom apartments in walk-up blocks
  • Terraces towards Surry Hills and Paddington
  • Converted shopfronts and studios above retail
  • Share-house and single-room moves at the end of a lease
  • Single items and part loads, including same-day furniture delivery
  • Packing and unpacking, full or partial

Beds, tables and flat-pack wardrobes come apart and go back together as part of the hourly rate, and we bring the tools — in a fourth-floor walk-up that is not optional. Wall-mounted TVs with in-wall cabling and plumbed-in appliances need a licensed trade, the one exception, flagged before the day.

How much removalists cost in Darlinghurst

Package Weekday Weekend Best for
2 removalists + 4.5t truck (20–22m³) $149/hr $159/hr 1–2 bedrooms
2 removalists + 6.5t truck (30m³) $169/hr $179/hr 2–3 bedrooms
3 removalists + 10t truck (45m³) $229/hr $239/hr 3–4 bedrooms

Two-hour minimum. Blankets, ropes, trolleys, dollies, shrink wrap and power tools included. Weekend rates are $10 per hour above weekday.

A studio in Darlinghurst typically runs two to three hours. A two-bedroom terrace runs three to five, and the flights of stairs usually decide where you land.

No fuel levy and no stair fee. Travel time is charged at a 45-minute minimum, or the actual travel time if it runs longer — never both — at your package’s hourly rate, on top of the two-hour minimum. Your tracking link shows the minute the crew left our Bondi depot, so you can check it against the invoice. Time rounded to the nearest 15 minutes, not up to the hour. A $50 booking fee confirms your date, with reschedules on 48 hours’ notice.

Track the truck — and check the invoice against the clock

Every job runs on our own live tracking system. You get a link showing when the crew leaves, when they arrive, when loading starts and finishes, and the running time as it happens.

Your invoice is generated from the times in that link. Rounded to the nearest 15 minutes. Every job ends with a walkthrough and a signed completion form before we charge anything.

On a small move that is billed by the hour with a two-hour minimum, being able to see the clock matters more, not less. You are not taking our word for how long four flights took.

Insured, rated and local: removalists Darlinghurst can check

  • $20 million public liability insurance, plus transit and cargo cover on the goods themselves. Older buildings with shared staircases are exactly where the first one matters.
  • 5.0 stars from 94 Google reviews.
  • Signed completion form on every job, so there are no invoice surprises.
  • Photographed condition reports, before we start and during the move.
  • Local crews, based in Bondi rather than dispatched across the city at 6am.

When a removalist says they are “fully insured”, ask which cover they mean. Public liability and transit insurance are different policies and only one protects your furniture on the truck.

Darlinghurst removalists FAQ

How much do removalists cost in Darlinghurst?

From $149 per hour on weekdays and $159 on weekends for two removalists and a 4.5-tonne truck, including GST, two-hour minimum. A studio typically runs two to three hours.

Do I need a parking permit in Darlinghurst?

Almost always. Most buildings have no driveway and City of Sydney issues removalist permits with lead time. Tell us both addresses when you book and we will confirm.

Can you handle a fourth-floor walk-up?

Yes, and it is common here. Tell us the floor when you book so we send the right crew size rather than discovering the flights on the day.

Do you do small studio and single-item moves?

Yes, at the same hourly rate with the same two-hour minimum. Small jobs get the same permit, protection and completion form as large ones.

Can you quote from photos?

Yes. Send photos of the room and the staircase on WhatsApp and we will tell you the crew size and the likely hours before you commit.

How far in advance should I book?

A week for weekdays. Two to three weeks for Saturdays and the end of the month.
