Vaucluse is the hardest suburb in the Eastern Suburbs to move in, and it has nothing to do with the size of the houses. It is the topography. Homes here are built down the slope toward the harbour, which means most of the carry is uphill to the truck — the opposite of how a removal normally works.

Large multi-level homes, streets that narrow and steepen as they drop towards the water, driveways cut into the slope, and internal staircases that turn twice between the garage and the living room. Why do Vaucluse moves take longer than the furniture suggests?
Because in this suburb almost nothing loads at street level.
- Steep, narrow streets. Many of the roads running down towards Parsley Bay and Diamond Bay are too tight for a fully loaded 10-tonne truck to turn or reverse safely.
- Driveways cut into the slope. Common here, and several cannot take a loaded truck at all. The truck then parks on the street and everything is carried up or down the drive.
- Multi-level homes. Three and four levels is normal, with the bedrooms furthest from the door and a staircase that turns. That is a crew-size decision, not a truck-size one.
- Higher-value contents. Art, glass, marble and full-height joinery are common. Those need wrapping and a slower pace, which is time, not a surcharge.
- Permits. Woollahra Municipal Council issues removalist parking permits and applications need lead time. Where there is no usable driveway, plan for one.
The approach decides the price
The single biggest cost driver in a Vaucluse move is the carry: the distance and the number of levels between your front door and where the truck can legally and safely stand.
A home with a flat driveway that takes the truck is a straightforward job. The same house with a driveway too steep to load on, or a street too narrow to turn in, is a completely different day — and quoting them the same way is how a removalist ends up having an uncomfortable conversation at 5pm.

In a four-level home the last thing onto the truck should be the first thing off, and getting that wrong means unloading half the truck on the nature strip to reach a bed base.
