What makes moving in Surry Hills its own problem?
The suburb was built before trucks and it shows. Narrow streets, terrace frontages barely wider than a doorway, staircases that turn twice on the way up, and almost no off-street parking anywhere.
- No driveways. Most terraces here open straight onto the footpath. Without a permit or a loading zone, there is nowhere legal for a truck to stand.
- One-way streets. Several of the residential streets between Crown and Bourke are one-way and narrow, which rules out the biggest truck entirely.
- Terrace staircases. Steep, narrow and usually with a turn. Wardrobes and bed bases often have to come apart to get up or down them. That is included in the rate.
- Warehouse conversions. Big open apartments in converted buildings, often with a goods lift that needs booking and a strata manager who wants an insurance certificate first.
Terraces, warehouse conversions and the permit question
The biggest cost driver in a Surry Hills move is not the volume of furniture. It is the distance between your front door and where the truck can legally park.
A terrace with a permitted space directly outside loads fast. The same terrace with the truck parked around the corner on Cleveland Street does not, and every trip between the two is on the clock. City of Sydney issues removalist parking permits and applications need lead time — this is not something to organise the morning of the move.
Converted warehouses are the opposite problem: the carry is short but the lift is shared and slow, and it has to be booked. We will tell you which of the two you are dealing with when you book.
Crown Street, Devonshire Street and the Central end
The Crown Street side is the densest: shops below, apartments above, and kerbside parking that is metered and full. Devonshire Street and towards Cleveland is more residential terraces, slightly wider, still no driveways. The Central and Chalmers Street end has more apartment blocks and a bit more loading access, plus far heavier traffic.
